About the organizers:

The SERB fellowship is provided by the Science and Engineering Research Board which was established in 2008 by an Act of Parliament, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

This program helps to encourage Science and Engineering and also gives financial help who are engaged in work like research, laboratories, academic institutes, and industries. 

About the Ramanujan Fellowship:

This fellowship emphasizes the need to look for the scientists/researchers working in laboratories outside India who want to return to India to pursue their careers in the Science and technological development of our nation. This fellowship can be taken by the fellows in any academic institution, universities and they will receive a stipend/award operating under the Government of India. 

Mission :

The main objective of this program is to contribute to enabling the Scientists/Researchers who belong to India but working abroad and want to return back to the county who will contribute to the country's growth and prosperity.

Who can apply:

•Any Indian Scientists and Engineers who are currently operating abroad.

•Age should be below 40.

•The candidate must be having degrees like Ph.D. in Science/Engineering, Masters in Engineering/Technology, or MD in Medicine, etc.

•The fellowship requires a candidate with a remarkable track record of research publications.

•The candidate won't be eligible for the stipend if they are selected for a normal position in the university or an institution.

•The candidate won't be able to apply to this fellowship if they have already taken a contract for another position at another institute.

•The applicant should be doing work in an abroad institute when applying for this fellowship.

Duration and Support of the fellowship:

The stipend of the fellowship will be INR 1,35,000/- per month.

•Grant amount for research will be INR 7,00,000/- lacs per annum and INR 60,000/- per annum as overhead charges.

•The length of the fellowship will be five yrs.


How to apply?

The candidates can’t self nominate yourself for this fellowship. 

•The nominations are provided only by head of the organisation or institutes and they choose only the remarkably working scientists having good amount of publications.

Selection criteria:

• Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB)  will send a letter to the person and also to the host institute notifying them of the award of Ramanujan Fellowship. 

• The selected candidate is expected to be joining the fellowship within six months of the date of the offer letter.

• Then he/she has to send their acceptance letter to the host institute showing the tentative months when the candidate wants to begin the fellowship, and then the institute which will be again forwarded to the SERB with bank transfer details of funds through RTGS.

•Then the SERB will be working to get administrative and financial approvals and then a sanction order is issued to the Host Institute and a copy is also given to the Ramanujan Fellow and to the Drawing and Disbursing Officer, SERB.

•On the date of beginning of the fellowship, grants are received by host organization.

Mode and Selection of Application:

•The scientists will have freedom to choose to work with any organization, laboratory, institutes in India.

•The fellowship aims at working in newer avenues to broaden their horizons for research and development.

•Nominations made from their own institute where the candidate has pursued his/her Ph.D. won’t be allowed.

•The scientists and technologists will have to approach the organization of their own interest to host them for fellowship.

•A Search-cum-Selection Committee will be appointed to select the Ramanujan fellows.

•The applications are welcomed throughout the year.

•The Head of the institute/university/academic personnel of an institute can send the nominations only.
